Make your Mac a clone

Whether Time Machine takes frequent backups of your Mac is a good idea before you undertook to install macOS-updates or upgrades to complete a duplicate of its contents (clone or mirror). Carbon Copy Cloner 6 (£29.90,, in addition to and in place of Time Machine and the preceding versions, can create a one-off clone or regular backup for MoJava and early.

The way you recover from the clone, Catalina and Big Sur alter. It is preferable to install macOS than to migrate from copying to your own internal storage and this is the only method for M1 macs. You do not need to clone the volume of the system that saves space, but if you want CCC may still do so.

Douzens of choices are available for CCC. Here we demonstrate how best to obtain from them, such as not copying things individually and taking a fast file restoration picture. Check the work of your clone by restored test items whatsoever you want.

HOW to clone your Mac in the correct direction

1 Set volume of the source

Select Tasks in the sidebar in Carbon Copy Cloner and name the new empty backup job. To make it your clone’s source, click the Source icon and choose the default Mac Startup Disk, Macintosh HD.

2 Set the target

Take note of your source’s space, then check the target volume for open space. Click the target icon, then pick the volume with sufficient capacity to hold the clone.

3 Set if repeating 3

If you wish to automatically repeat this cloning, click on Automation to configure the scheduling framework. A daily clone is normally ideal for backups or if the disk is removed for MacBooks connected occasionally.

4 Details of the planning

It is a good idea to set the runtime for when it is not used if your Mac runs overnight. If you are sleeping, you may wake up or postpone the backup job until later. Weekends may also be skiped.

5 Set of things omitted

To choose things you do not want from the clone, click on the Task Plan at the bottom of the main window. Consider storing duplicates of large files like Virtual Machines that continuously change while used.

6 Set advanced choices

CCC has numerous sophisticated features such as pre- and post-copying scripts. You may now adjust the priority of your copying jobs here, if you want it to back up while using your Mac.

7 Dry run check 7

Check whether copying produces what you want before starting the initial clone. Clicking on the Preview tool, CCC will dry up and predict the precise size without transferring any real files. Correct any mistakes immediately.

8 Set snapshots for the source

Please take regular pictures. Click Sidebar Volume and choose Macintosh HD – Data or just Data startup data volume. Set on on each copy of the volume to create a picture of the CCC.

9 Retained snapshot

Most of the snapshot retention policies for CCC should be optimal since older snapshots may consume a lot of disk space. To establish your policies, click the Customize option, but then watch the space you are using.

10 Volume clone 10

When you’ve configured everything, reset the task on the sidebar and create the first clone using the Run Now command. CCC then graphically displays its progress of the clone and precise time-to-finish estimation.

11 Actions to verify task

Click Job History after cloning is done, pick the task performed and click the Task Trends button to see a summary of activities. Click the Start button in the main window if the job is going to reappear.

12 System clone optional 12

If you wish to clone CCC’s system disk, configure the destination to backup fully by clicking on its icon and choosing the Legacy Bootable Backup Assistant command before step 7 follows.
